Germany’s Basic Law

An Introduction to the German Government's Founding Document

Germany is a key actor on the global stage and a prominent liberal democracy. The German constitution, the Basic Law, is the basis upon which Germany’s first-class democracy is thriving today. In our latest educational animation, we breakdown the structure and content of the Basic Law through the eyes of three average German citizens, Lisbeth, Hasan, and Uwe.

With the introduction of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Basic Law has been challenged, and democratic backsliding has spread across parts of Europe and other corners of the world. However, thanks to the safeguards and strong foundational elements of the German Basic Law, Germany’s democracy has remained strong.

This animation is part of the Bertelsmann Foundation’s collection of educational videos about Germany’s key political institutions and processes.
