On March 4, 2018, Italians went to the polls to elect their next government.  In the midst of economic, social and demographic upheaval, parties across the political spectrum aimed to capture the mood of a disgruntled electorate.  With the populist Five Star Movement and anti-immigrant League on the rise alongside the faltering of traditional powerhouses Forza Italia and the Democratic Party, this election turned Italian politics upside down.

Was this a result of a prolonged economic slump?  Was it the destabilizing influx of refugees?  Or did technological innovation provide a springboard for parties normally relegated to the sidelines?  The answers to these questions and more can be found in Disrupting Democracy: Italy.
